In their book, "Medical Terminology for Dummies," the authors Beverley Henderson and Jennifer Lee Dorsey write that medical terminology is "made up of the terms that describe human anatomy and physiology" and related terms on body locations, diseases, clinical diagnosis and lab tests. Practice exercises help break down the parts of a medical term so it can be more easily understood.
Break down each word into prefixes, suffixes and root words. This helps you learn how to correctly spell the term. Dermatology is broken down into its root -- 'dermat,' meaning skin, and suffix, 'ology,' meaning knowledge, for example. Similarly, it is easier to spell the root word 'tonsil' and the suffix 'itis' than spell the full word 'tonsillitis'. Write down each part of the word to familiarize yourself with its spelling. Medical-terminology exercises help familiarize you with words related to the circulatory system, urinary system, reproductive systems, digestive system and other parts of the human anatomy.
Use a multiple-choice quiz to test your knowledge of definitions of medical terminology and diseases associated with each system.
